Sociology next year at Mount Allison

Sociology involves the study of people as they interact with one another in specific structural, cultural, and historical contexts. The discipline provides information on the social world, offers training in specific research skills, and introduces students to different perspectives on social life.

When you study sociology you examine the role of powerful institutions like the media or the education system and how these might be changed. You also study emerging phenomena like cyber culture. You look at inequality, ethnicity, and questions of power and you do it in an innovative way. For example, in a course in feminist perspectives, students have designed and run a camp for young people, teaching media literacy and enhancing self-esteem.

Sociology expands our horizons, challenges us to think critically about the world around us, and prepares us to participate in that world.

The mandate of the Department of Sociology is to extend knowledge about and understanding of the social world, and to introduce the discipline of sociology as part of the liberal education mission of Mount Allison. Many of our students have embarked on careers that require such information, call for such skills, and benefit from such ways of understanding. Sociology also expands our horizons, challenges us to think critically about the world around us, and prepares us to participate in that world.
