Mount Allison's Garnet and Gold Musical Theatre Society is proud to present the Sackville Premiere of Roald Dalh’s Willy Wonka. The show runs January 19th-21th at 8p.m. at Convocation Hall on the Mount Allison campus, with a matinée Saturday at 2:00pm. Doors open thirty minutes before show time.
Roald Dahl’s timeless story of the world-famous candy man and his quest to find an heir comes to life in this stage adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Those familiar with the 1971 film will recognize favorite songs including “The Candyman”, among others.
This new stage musical adaptation brings all of the magic of the page to vivid life on stage. Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka is a scrumdidilyumptious musical guaranteed to delight everyone’s sweet tooth. In a troubled world looking for escape, Willy Wonka will take the audience on a fantastic ride into the land of pure imagination!
Coming back to direct again this year is Artistic Director of Live Bait Theatre, Karen Valanne.
“It’s such a pleasure to be involved with this entirely student run production” comments Valanne, “I am constantly amazed by the dedication and skill of these students, I can't wait for the audience to see what we have in store for them."
President of the society Justin Thomas is back on the executive again this year. As a Sackville native, Thomas has been involved with the Society for the past 10 years, starting at age 12 when he was in the children’s chorus for Annie Get Your Gun.
“Our team is working enthusiastically to make this year's show a ‘must see’ production. Since our society is all-inclusive, everyone is bringing something different to the show, which is going to display the great degree of talent that Mount Allison and the Town of Sackville have to offer, both on and off the stage.”
Over 100 Mount Allison students and local community members have been working hard since October to stage the musical. The set is one of the largest and most elaborate that Garnet and Gold has seen. This year, Winton Brangman, third year music student, is directing the pit orchestra and Justine Koroscil, a third year voice major, is the choral director. The choreographers are Mount A students Alisa Hagen-Strand and Julie Melanson.
This year’s production marks Garnet and Gold’s 80th anniversary as a Society, making it one of Mount Allison’s oldest student groups. To celebrate this impressive landmark in the Society’s history, several special initiatives have been planned. Notably a fundraiser campaign was held and two new microphones were purchased with the help of Renaissance Sackville and Garnet and Gold Alumni. To share their history with the audience, a special exhibit will be on display in the foyer of Convocation Hall outlining G&G’s achievements over the past 80 years.
Tickets to the show are $10.00 for students and seniors, $12.00 for general. At the Matinée only, there will be a special price for children, of $5. Tickets are now available at Mount Allison SAC Office (in the Wallace McCain Student Centre), Tidewater Books and Joey's Restaurant. It is also possible to reserve tickets online at mta.ca/garnetandgold.
Following the Saturday Janaury 21 evening performance, there will be a “meet and greet” with the cast & crew at Joey’s Pizza and Pasta.
