SECTION V - TRAINING COURSES AND ADVANCEMENT
1.
General Policy
It is the policy of the University to assist regular
employees in furthering their educationand improving their work-related
skills.
2. University Courses
Regular full-time employees may take one six credit
University course, or equivalent, eachyear, either as an officially registered
student for credit or as an auditor, with permission fromthe head of their
department. Time away from work does not normally have to be made up.For
remission of fees see part 6 of this section.
If a regular full-time
employee wishes to take a second course in the same year and the head ofthe
department and Human Resources agree that the second course is directly related
to themember's present duties or would prepare the member for upgrading or
promotion to aparticular University position in the foreseeable future,
permission may be granted and timeaway from work will not normally have to be
made up.
Where it is NOT agreed that this second course meets these
requirements, permission maystill be granted but time away from work will have
to be made up.
3. Seminars and Workshops Held on the Campus
Seminars, workshops, and
demonstrations are arranged from time-to-time on subjects ofinterest. The
Association is involved in both the selection of topics for such seminars,
andthe planning of specific seminars, if the seminars are intended for
secretaries, clerks,or technicians.
4. Seminars and Workshops Held Off
Campus
From time-to-time employees may be given permission by the
supervisor to attend workshopsand seminars held at other places. Furthermore, if
the seminar will improve the employee'sability to do his or her work, or
otherwise will be of benefit to the University, and, if funds areavailable, the
cost of attending the seminar or workshop may be subsidized in whole or in
part.
5. Fee Discounts
The fee discount policy for University
courses taken at Mount Allison was establishedby resolution of the Board of
Regents and is subject to change. The discount, which mustbe applied for
annually and in writing, covers credit courses only. At the time ofprinting, the
resolution was as follows.
A) Full remission of tuition fees will be
granted for full-time employees on regular employment,their spouses, and
dependent children.
B) Such employees will qualify for remission of fees
after two years' full-time employment, andany fee covered by the terms of this
policy will then be remitted retroactively, to the date offirst appointment, at
the rate which was then in effect.
C) It is understood that dependent
children are those who are and remain dependent up to amaximum of 25 years of
age.
D) The remission of fees will apply for both full-time and part-time
students for that number ofcourses normally required in the acquisition of a
bachelors degree.
E) The fee remission will be available to dependents
even if the employee becomes retired,deceased, or permanently disabled while an
employee of the University.
F) Nothing in this policy prohibits the
University from making separate arrangements withregard to the policy on
remission of fees with persons on a less than two year appointment.
This
is a taxable benefit and the value of the remission, including the value
associated with aspouse or dependent child, will be included on an employee's T4
slip. If a person ceases to be anemployee, a spouse, or a dependent child during
a term, the value of the discount will beprorated.
Receipts for tuition
fees are sent to the student by Financial Services.In addition:
1. When
an employee asks for and receives permission to take courses during the first
twoyears of his/her employment, no tuition fees will have to be paid during the
term ofthe employment even if his/her employment terminates before the end of
two years.
2. Regular employees, who work part-time, will receive the
full remission of fees forone course each year provided that course is taken by
the employee. An employee willreceive a prorated remission of tuition fees for
other courses taken by the employee,his/her spouse, or his/her dependent
children.
3. Temporary employees, but not including grant employees, will
receive the full remissionof tuition fees for one course each year provided that
course is taken by the employee.The employee will receive no other benefits of
this policy unless specific provision is madefor additional benefits at the time
of appointment.
4. (i) If an employee, with less than five years of
seniority, is granted a leave of absencefor one year to become a full-time
student, this policy will apply to one course takenby the employee. The policy
will continue to apply in full to the employee's spouseand dependent
children.
(ii) If an employee, with five or more years of seniority, is
granted a leave of absencefor one year to become a full-time student, this
policy will apply to up to five fullcourses (30 credit hours) if they are
successfully completed. The policy willcontinue to apply in full to the
employee's spouse and dependent children.
(iii) If an employee is granted
a subsequent leave of absence to become a full-timestudent, the fee discount
policy will no longer apply to the employee, the spouse,or the dependent
children during the leave of absence.
