As of 2007, 47 of our students have earned the distinction of being named a Rhodes Scholar and Mount Allison consistently ranks as one of the best undergraduate universities in Canada in various surveys and studies such as Maclean’s magazine university rankings, the Globe and Mail University Report Card, and the National Survey of Student Engagement.

This does not happen by chance.

Maintaining our reputation and our strong record of success requires daily effort by our entire community. This takes energy, dedication, commitment, and creativity by students, faculty, staff, and alumni — and a strong financial and resource capacity. We must maintain our reputation and extend our excellence. We have identified the factors that will allow us to accomplish this: the best and brightest students; creative, skilled, and committed faculty; and enhanced academic and extracurricular programs.

We have developed a thorough and integrated 10-year strategic plan to ensure that the Mount Allison Experience is one that is unique, creative, and world-class. We will integrate our lively extracurricular and residential activities more directly into our excellent academic programming. And we will focus our activities and initiatives on culture and creativity, scientific imagination and discovery, public service and citizenship, environmental leadership, and globalization.

We are committed to accelerating our momentum for change and development. We will be true to our ideals, we will build on our success, and we will JUMP forward to become the best publicly-funded undergraduate university in North America.

Mount Allison’s balanced budgets not only ensure academic and program quality for students but also testify to a disciplined and strategic approach to financial management. Another barometer of our fiscal success is attributable to the fact that Mount Allison is debt free and has a strong endowment. This $100-million endowment, one of the largest in the country on a per-student basis, annually accounts for an equivalent of 12 per cent of the University’s general operating fund. The income generated from the endowment is used to support the University’s most pressing needs, such as scholarships and bursaries to new and returning students each year.

Our unique character has been shaped by our sound financial practices and the transformative power of our endowment. The consequence is that we are able to provide incomparable opportunities to students. Our $86-million goal for the JUMP Mount Allison campaign is ambitious and our record demonstrates that we are ready to make the most of our benefactors’ support.

It is now our responsibility to direct this great institution for future generations and to build upon this inherited legacy.

Named Endowments at Mount Allison University

For more than a century, endowments, along with outstanding students and professors, have been at the heart of North America’s most prestigious universities.

Establishing a named endowment at Mount Allison is one of the most worthwhile investments a benefactor can consider. Only the income from the principal is expended in accordance with the University’s spending policies so that future generations of faculty and students receive the same benefits currently enjoyed at Mount Allison University. The endowment income provides a stream of funding to safeguard Mount Allison’s tradition of excellence against changing economic times.

Throughout the years and decades, named endowments enable the University to address the highest priorities at any given time and become an engine of transformation for the benefit of future generations of Allisonians.
