Donor Report 2009
A gift from all of us — Anderson Family
In 2008 Tim Anderson (’92) and his family made an investment with promising returns — promoting the success of deserving students — by establishing the Anderson Family Commerce Bursary.
Tim and his wife Karen (Lee) (’91) had been making gifts to Mount Allison since graduating, but they wanted to create a more permanent place to start directing their donations. So Tim approached his father Derek (’62) about combining their contributions and creating an endowment.
Says Tim, “We decided on a bursary because a good education is so important, and everybody deserves a chance to do the things they are capable of doing. We just wanted to give them a helping hand.”
The decision to award the prize to a Commerce student came easily, “My wife is a Commerce grad, and we both have worked in the financial sector, so a gift to the Ron Joyce Centre for Business Studies seemed like a natural fit. It’s not a massive endowment, but it gives us a permanent place to start directing our donations. This is a legacy gift that we can build on every year. And it is one that our family members, who also have ties to Mount A, can contribute to as well.”
Tim and Karen have long been ambassadors of Mount Allison and have stayed connected with former classmates and the University’s administration for years — organizing and hosting events in their Montreal home, and promoting the University to potential students and their families.
Says Tim, “I think it’s so important that alumni support their alma mater — with both their time and their resources. It’s our responsibility to try to help universities flourish, because if we don’t back them, how can they expect outside supporters to get on board?”
Tim and Karen say the personalization of a Mount Allison education, with its intimate classes and approachable professors, gave them a great start in life and helped ensure their future successes. They say they’re happy to be able to jumpstart the education of tomorrow’s business leaders.
