UNICEF Uzbekistan: Rotating Mission

UNICEF Uzbekistan is committed to the advancement of child development and security, with several programs operating within the country working towards a better future for the children and youth of Uzbekistan. As part of the UNICEF Uzbekistan team I would work with the various UNICEF programs in a support capacity as well as helping prepare for a conference on child centered education and preparing my own presentation of UNICEF's programs in Uzbekistan.
Spread Trees, Not AIDS

Sandema Girls' Leadership Program

The aim of this project is to break down barriers between myself and the girls of Sandema and also the barriers between them and their goals by acting as a participant in and co-facilitator of the Girls' Leadership Program in place. By becoming immersed in the culture of this area, and developing a meaningful relationship with the girls, I hope to learn about participation-based leadership, Ghanian culture, and about what obstacles these girls face in their lives in order to gain a better understanding of how to steer towards solutions. The financial and social means of the western facilitator/participate are meant to legitimize the learning experience for both parties.
IVHQ Uganda Orphange Project

I have been accepted to volunteer at an orphange in Uganda for a period of four weeks starting in April. I will be working along side locally staffed orphanages in taking care of children, many of whom have been orphaned due to the HIV/AIDS crisis in Uganda. This is an experience that I hope will impact positively on my life as well as the lives of the children I am working with. Upon my return to Mount Allison, I will initiate talks with various student groups to generate awareness in the hopes of engaging the community with the current issues in Uganda.

We will be attending the Semester at Sea program, offered through the University of Virginia. The program is a full 15 credit semester that fosters leadership and global connections. We will engage in different methods of learning, ranging from lecture to hands-on interaction, that will broaden our understanding of what it is to be a leader. Upon our return to Mount Allison, we will initiate programs to generate awareness and inspire other students to engage with global issues as we share our experiences.
Volunteering Opportunity at Kenyatta National Hospital and Mbagathi District Hospital

I have been accepted to participate in medical volunteer work in both a hospital and community setting with Kenyatta National Hospital and Mbagathi District Hospital, in Nairobi, Kenya for a period of six weeks beginning May of 2010. This volunteer opportunity would allow me to work with doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals while interacting with patients in rural and urban Kenya. This will be a learning experience that will positively impact my life and the lives of those receiving healthcare in Kenya. Upon my return, the gains from my experience will be shared with the Mount Allison University community.
Youth Challenge International Volunteer Placement in Guyana for HIV/AIDS Education and Literacy Development

I will be traveling to Guyana in July/August 2010 with Youth Challenge International. During my five weeks abroad I will be living in local communities and helping to facilitate and organize workshops and educational programs with a focus on HIV/AIDS and literacy to youth in Guyana. This will take place in different communities throughout Guyana.

Breaking the Silence Delegation to Guatemala

Breaking the Silence (BTS) is a Maritime-Gualemala solidarity movement and is a voluntary network of people in the Maritimes who support the efforts of Guatemalans struggling for political, social, economic and environmental justice. During the BTS delegation we will travel to Guatemala and visit BTS partners and learn about issues affecting Guatemalans as well as the impact of Canadian foreign policy and Canadian foreign policy and Canadian corporations on Guatemala. As part of the delegation we are expecting to apply what we learn from the experience through both informal and formal opportunities such as community and church groups, educating others about our experience and taking an active leadership role involving issues surround Guatemala.
Youth Partnership with Jamaica

We, six Mount Allison students, are traveling to Kingston, Jamaica with aims of making positive social impacts on the community through our human assistance initiative. Our current focus is working with children and establishing an after-school program that will continue to give back to the community even after we have left. To continue our work, we have been in close contact with the Kingston Kiwansis Club, and a local high school to assist in the long-term stability. We are also in the process of developing an AIDS awareness campaign that we are piloting in a local high school.

Conservation Work in Honduras

Operation Wallacea is a series of biological and conservation management research programmes that operate in remote locations across the world. These expeditions are designed with specific wildlife conservation aims in mind - from identifying areas needing protection, through to implementing and assessing conservation management programmes. I will be traveling to Honduras as a forest research assistant in order to gain a more in-depth understanding of the methods used for environmental research, benefit the research teams, the overall project, and expand the knowledge base within the country.
BaseCamp International Project in Nicaragua

I will be traveling to Diriamba, Nicaragua with BaseCamp International and I will be volunteering at the Silais Health Clinic. It is run by the Ministry of Health of Nicaragua and caters to low-income families. One day a week I will travel with their mobile clinic unit which provides health care to people in very rural and remote areas. I will be living with a local family and will receive one month of Spanish language training to enable me to communicate effectively at work and at home.

This summer I will be traveling to the remote Peruvian Amazon to work as a Research Assistant with Operation Wallacea. Operation Wallacea is a series of biological and conservation management research programs that operate in biological hotspots across the world with the goal of identifying and maintaining areas that need protection. Specifically, I will be taking part in research at the Lago Preto Conservation Concession off the Yavari River from June 21st to July 18th.

Volunteer Project in Peru

This summer I will be volunteering with ANIA (the association of children and their environment) in Peru through Volunteers Abroad. I will be working in a small village called San Francisco of Yarinacocha near Pucallpa. I will be teaching children about the environment with the help of various workshops and educational activities. I will also be looking at how to make their community more sustainable and environmentally friendly by introducing organic farming and other initiatives. I will also teach English and help build a centre for the ANIA staff.
