Robert Hampton Gray
spacerGray, Robert Hampton (1917-1945). An aviator with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve, this British Columbian served aboard the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Formidable. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for participating in a bombing attack on a Japanese destroyer at Onagawa on August 9th, 1945. With his aircraft in flames, Gray dived to within fifty feet of the target before releasing his bombs. Taking a direct hit, the destroyer immediately sank. Unfortunately, Gray perished when his plane crashed.
