Library Gifts in Kind: Information for Donors

Mount Allison University Libraries and Archives welcomes gifts that support our mandate to provide the faculty, students, and staff of the University with the information resources they require to support their academic, research, and curricular needs. Acceptable donations should meet the criteria of our collection policies and are evaluated by the same standards as purchased materials.

We regret that space and staff constraints prevent us from accepting materials which unnecessarily duplicate items already in our collection; most textbooks; journal issues, unless they fill a gap in our run of the title; and items in poor physical condition.

The offer of a gift to the library should be made to the Library Main Office.

For gifts of more than twenty-five items, we recommend an on-site assessment before the gift is shipped to the library. If this is not practical, an itemized list (author, title, publication information, date, and edition if applicable) is required for gifts of more than twenty-five items.

If a tax receipt is required, this must be indicated on the Provisional Offer to Donate Form. The library will appraise gifts valued at less than $1000. Donations which exceed this amount must be valued by an external appraiser, and are the responsibility of the donor.

Upon donation, items become the property of the University. The library will make the final decision on the final use and disposition of gifts. Items which are not selected to be added to the collection may be offered to other libraries, sold, or discarded. Unwanted materials can be returned to the donor at his/her expense, if so requested at the time of donation.

The library reserves as its right decisions regarding unsolicited gifts.
