Off-campus Access to Indexes & Databases: Troubleshooting Tips

Most of the links in the Library Catalogue to ebooks and to journals which are available in library databases will work on campus only.

For off-campus access to journals in licensed databases (such as JSTOR, Project Muse, etc.) and to e-books in the ebrary and MyiLibrary collections, please use the off-campus links on the Indexes and Databases page and the E-Book Collections page of the library website.

Having difficulties accessing library resources from off campus? This troubleshooting guide might help.

What to do if...

1. Nothing works or cannot get past the log-in page:
  • Ensure that you are using the correct username and password; watch for typos and case sensitivity (upper case, lower case).
  • You should be using the same username and password that you use to connect to the Campus Network, to access email, WEBCT or WEBSIS. Password is case sensitive.
  • Your connection to the Internet may not be fast enough to handle the data flow. You may need to upgrade your Internet connection.
2. Nothing happens after you have entered your username and password:
  • Your connection to the Internet may not be fast enough - common with telephone links.
  • Your may be using an older verion of a browser. Try upgrading to the latest version of whichever browser you are using.
  • Certain indexes and databases may not be designed to work with all browsers. If possible, try using a different browser.
3. External site asks for username and password:
  • The specific content you are trying access may not be available to Mount Allison users or may be embargoed. Ask a librarian if you are not sure.
  • The external site (database) may not be recognizing the proxy server connection. Please contact Systems Librarian Brian McNally (bmcnally@mta.ca)
4. Some databases work but others do not:
  • Contact Systems Librarian Brian McNally (bmcnally@mta.ca)
5. External site connects and you are able to do a search but have problems when trying to display records:
  • Your connection may be too slow.
  • Your browser’s configuration may not be compatible with this type of connection. This usually involves the cookies settings or other browser settings: a common setting for cookies is “Accept all cookies”

To speak to a librarian or to report a problem, please send an e-mail to infodesk@mta.ca or call call 506-364-2564. You may reach the Systems Librarian by calling 506-364-2237.
