SUBJECT AREA:  G-GF - GEOGRAPHY

Purpose: The material in this area includes geography, oceanography and environmental sciences*. It supports the work of students of environmental studies/science, geography/geoscience as well as the social sciences such as economics and political science.

Existing Collection Strength: Generally it is at the Selective level (3) for geography/geosciences; Representative (2) for oceanography and environmental science. This reflects the traditional emphasis on human geography as formerly taught at Mt. A.

Current Collecting Intensity: Collecting building has changed somewhat in this area recently as a result of a considerably revised curriculum in the GeographyGeoscience Department. The new approach places additional emphasis on physical geography such as environmental science, morphology, resource management, transportation and communication. These areas need additional buying to bring them to the Selective level (3).

Geographic Focus: North America, Western Europe predominate but Japan and the Pacific rim are now collected to reflect the changes in the curriculum.

Chronological Focus: Generally current, except for some of the cultural geographical material.

Languages Collected: Predominately English.

Formats Collected: Books predominate, journals are particularly important for the geosciences courses. Government Documents, census and other statistical material are important. The discipline is very appropriate for video and software programmes.

Access to Journal Articles: The Library does not subscribe to a specific index, either electronic or print for geography/geoscience/environment. Many of the multidisciplinary indexes are relevant to this area.

* Much of the material for these subjects also fall in other parts of the classification such as QE, several Hs, T and C-D, E-F.
