APPENDIX C: WINTHROP PICKARD BELL COLLECTION OF ACADIANA COLLECTION POLICY
The Winthrop Pickard Bell Collection of Acadiana was established in 1967 in memory of Winthrop Pickard Bell, Mount Allison, Class of 1904. The Collection is based on the land area once known as Acadie, that is the present day provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, and the eastern part of the State of Maine.
The major strength of the Collection is material on families and settlements in the Maritimes, subjects which were central to Dr. Bell's research interests and thus formed the nucleus of the Library which was given to Mount Allison after his death. The initial gift of 800 books, serials and government publications has grown to a collection of over 15,000 volumes in all formats: books, serials, maps, videos, slides, broadsides, microform, etc.
All subjects having to do with the Maritime provinces up to 1945 are collected. Both new and older imprints are purchased, and while English language material forms the bulk of the Collection, material in other languages is also collected.
A vertical file of pamphlets, research-in-progress, clippings, etc. is maintained. There is also a collection of approximately 1500 slides on Maritime subjects, complete with a catalogue and index.
The Collection is housed in the Rare Books Room of the Ralph Pickard Bell Library, is catalogued in machine-readable format and available through the OPAC. In addition, The Chignecto Database, a searchable bibliographic database of more than 4000 entries is maintained and developed for access to items of particular interest on the immediate region.
Items from the Collection must be used in the Library and are not available for Interlibrary Loan.
Funding for purchases is granted on an annual basis from the interest on the endowment fund which supports the Winthrop Pickard Bell Chair in Maritime Studies.
