What is RefWorks?

RefWorks is a Web-based bibliography and database manager that allows you to store and organize your citations. It will also automatically format your bibliographies according to APA, MLA, Chicago or other citation styles.

Many of the indexes and databases made available by the Library (ProQuest and Project Muse, for example) have built-in features allowing you to export citations to RefWorks. For databases that do not have this built-in feature, citations may be entered manually or imported as text files.

Getting started:

• Go to the RefWorks Login page
• If you are using RefWorks for the first time, click on "Sign up for an Individual Account" to create an account
• If you already have a RefWorks account, enter your RefWorks Login name and password.

Help and instructions:

• Read the RefWorks Quick Start Guide (.pdf).
• Visit the RefWorks Tutorial (also accessible from within RefWorks).
• Use the searchable onscreen Help feature (accessible from within RefWorks).
• Instructions for importing records from the Mt.A Library Catalogue.

Linking Microsoft Office with Write-N-Cite Add-in
If Add-ins does not appear in the top banner of Microsoft Office Word click on Start - All Programs - Refworks - Install Write-N-Cite Plugin for Word and follow the instructions. Close and restrart Microsoft Word and the Add-ins for Write-N-Cite should appear in the top banner. Now you will be able to directly import references from REFWORKS into your essay and automatically create properly formatted "in text references" and the cited references bibliography at the end of your paper in a wide variety of styles.

A note about importing citations into RefWorks
Remember that "RefWorks doesn't write the information -- it only reads it." In other words, to ensure that your bibliography is properly formated in the citation style you choose (APA, MLA...), it is important to make sure that all relevant fields (title, author, etc.) were imported correctly. Off-campus access
Once you have created a RefWorks account using an on-campus computer (in the library, in a computer lab, in your office...), you will receive an e-mail with the group code needed for remote access. Once you have the group code, you will then be able to access RefWorks from off-campus. Additional details will be included in the e-mail you receive once you've created your account.
