Library Catalogue Search Tips
The search boxes on the Library home page permit you to perform two types of searches: Keyword and Starts With (Browse).
Keyword Searching:
A Keyword search allows you to search the catalogue using words or phrases. This is a flexible type of search that permits you to search for words or phrases that appear in the title, subject headings, author’s name, or elsewhere in the catalogue record. You can combine words and phrases using Boolean operators such as AND, OR, NOT. Use 'single quotes' to designate a phrase.
- Example: music and (pop or rock) and (encyclopedia or history).
For more details and examples, see the About the Mount Allison University Library Catalogue page.
Starts With (or Browse) Searching:
A Starts With (or Browse) search allows you to browse a list of titles, authors or subject headings that correspond to the information you provide. This type of search is best used when you are searching for a *particular* title, author or subject.
- Example of an Author search: Atwood Margaret
- Example of a Title search: Life of Pi
- Example of a Subject search: Sustainable development Citizen participation
A note about Subject Searches:
Subject searches use Library of Congress Subject Headings. These are standardized headings used to describe what a book or other publication is about.
Search Tip:
When viewing the catalogue record for a particular book, you can click on the LC subject heading(s) assigned to that book to find other books in the library that cover the same or similar subjects.
