Based out of the Centre for Security Studies at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, the ISN presents news, research and other publications, e-learning opportunities and more in the areas of international relations, area studies, international business, security and military studies, comparative studies, and human rights.

Encyclopedia of government and politics. 2nd ed. Eds. Mary Hawkesworth and Maurice Kogan. (London: Routledge, 2004) Call number: JA 61 .C66 2004 reference section on the main floor of the Library. Volume 2 of this set (p. 857 onwards) Part IX: International relations and Part X: Major issues in contemporary world politics. The two sections mentioned above are particularly helpful including essays written on contemporary issues in international relations including: theory of international relations, feminist approaches to international relations, the United Nations, globalization, democratization, Latin America: democratization and its consequences and genocide. Bibliographies at the end of each essay make this a valuable resource.

This book covers critical issues in world politics as well and country information.

United Nations

Yearbook of the United Nations (New York: Department of Public Information, United Nations, 1945-) Call number: JX 1977 .A37 Y4 Most recent 2002 edition is in the reference collection on the main floor, full run of yearbooks from 1946/1947 are on the second floor. This annual publication provides a guide to the year at the United Nations: indexes at the back of each volume can be used to track issues and country activity.

Official site of the UN. Use the site index (link located in bottom toolbar) for an overview of the massive amount of information available at this site.

UN Documentation Centre
"Official document system of the United Nations" this site provides nicely organized access to the publications of the bodies within the United Nations system: General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Secretariat, International Court of Justice and the Trusteeship Council. Many other resources are also accessible from the top toolbar including: research guides, document alert (important documents which have been recently published) and even a live UN web cast.

UN System Pathfinder
(Dag Hammarskjold Library, United Nations) This site provides a useful set of research guides to major UN publications organized by subject (listed on the left hand site). Guides for 15 subjects are currently available including economic development, environment and international security & peacekeeping. Links to online documents are also included.

United Nations Scholars Workstation
(Library, Yale University) This site has been devised to support the United Nations Studies Program at Yale University. It is "a collection of texts, finding aids, data sets, maps, and pointers to print and electronic information. Subject coverage includes disarmament, economic and social development, environment, human rights, international relations, international trade, peacekeeping, and population and demography". Some sections of this site relate directly to Yale but sections "research tools" and "research approaches" are valuable aids for anyone trying to select and use the huge amount of information available on the UN.

Schiavone, Giuseppe. International organizations: a dictionary and directory. 5th ed. (New York: Palgrave, 2001) Call number: JX 1995 .S335 2001 reference collection, main floor of Library. Includes an introductory essay on current issues in international organization, alphabetical listing of over 200 organizations including origins, history, objectives, structure, activities, contact information including web pages where available. Longer entries have a bibliography for further research.

(Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex) This site is packed with information, especially helpful are: resource guides on key topics and and country profiles (these are listed on the right hand side of main page - scroll all the way down to find the link to country profiles). Resource guides list of recent publications on a subject, full text is provided where available.

Africa Portal
The Africa Portal is an online knowledge resource for policy-related issues on Africa. An undertaking by the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), Makerere University (MAK), and the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), the Africa Portal offers open access to a suite of features including an online library collection; a resource for opinion and analysis; an experts directory; an international events calendar; and a mobile technology component—all aimed to equip users with research and information on Africa’s current policy issues.

Handbook of Latin American Studies (HLAS)
(Hispanic Division, Library of Congress) A searchable bibliography of annotated references to books, book chapters, journal articles and conference papers on Latin America. This site offers coverage from 1935 onwards.This is a multidisciplinary database which includes government, politics and international relations. 

Political database of the Americas
(Centre for Latin American Studies, Georgetown University / Unit for the Promotion of Democracy, Organization of American States) This site is a resource for political information on the Internet, with a primary focus on Latin America. The site is divided into sections on: constitutions, electoral systems and data, political parties, executive, legislative and judicial institution and civil society.

Latin American Network Information Centre (LANIC)
(Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, University of Texas at Austin) The mission of this site is "to facilitate access to Internet-based information to, from, or on Latin America". Most of the resources on this award winning site have been designed for academic research and are divided by subject from the home page.

BBC Country Profiles
"History, politics and economic background of countries and territories" plus background on certain international organizations. Some include audio or video clips from the BBC Archives.

CIA World Factbook 2004
This is the electronic version of the well-known reference book published annually by the CIA. Information available  for each country includes map, summary of government, economy and transnational issues. Ideal for quick and accurate information on the countries of the world.

Erik Herron's guide to politics in East Central Europe and Eurasia
(Erik Herron, Centre for Russian and Eastern European Studies, University of Kansas) "The site is designed to facilitate research on the politics and economics of transition states in the post-communist world".

Country Studies
(Library of Congress, Federal Research Division) This site covers over 100 regions and countries of the world with online versions of books previously published by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies / Area Handbook Program sponsored by the Department of the Army. This site is useful because individual country studies provide clear, detailed analysis on the society, economy, government and politics and security issues of each country. Most material on this site was published between 1988 to 1998.

Conflict studies

Crisisweb
(International Crisis Group (ICG) an independent non-profit organization based in Brussels, Belgium. The ICG uses the observations and analysis of field staff located in areas of conflict around the world and political advocacy to prevent and resolve conflict). This web site is an excellent source for summaries of conflicts around the world. The factual detail with a strong emphasis on analysis makes this a useful site for researchers.

INCORE: Initiative on conflict resolution and ethnicity
(University of Ulster, Ireland) This site is packed with information on the study of conflict. Use the top menu bar to navigate, particularly helpful are: INCORE internet thematic guides which provide a list of detailed research guides on subjects associated with conflict including UN peacekeeping, gender and conflict, refugees and human rights, etc. INCORE internet country guides with regularly updated information on conflict in 43 regions and countries around the world.

Anderson, Ewan W. Global geopolitical flashpoints: an atlas of conflict. (Chicago: Fitzroy Dearborn, 2000). Call number: JC 319 .A52 2000 reference collection on the main floor of the Library. This book covers 123 points of conflict around the world. Entries cover history of the issue, a map, current status of the conflict and a short bibliography for further research.

Rights and democracy
(International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development) This non partisan organization was created by Canada's Parliament in 1988 to promote human rights and democracy around the world. Links on left: "Think tank" and "Publications" link to full text documents.

Council on Foreign Relations
This non-partisan organization is dedicated to improving awareness of foreign policy issues in the US and worldwide. The Council has a research program: click on "Publications" to access bibliography of books published by the Council and full text of reports, analysis and commentary.
The Council also publishes the journal Foreign affairs which is available at the Library at call number D 410 .F71 (on the ground level floor of the Library) from 1922 onwards or full text through ProQuest from vol.65(3) 1986 -

Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
This private non-profit organization seeks to advance co-operation between nations and promote active engagement by the United States in international affairs. Click on "Publications" link from top tool bar to access bibliography of books published and full text pdf files of policy briefs, Carnegie papers and articles. Also, from home page see the "Doing research?" section at the bottom right to find resources by topic, region or expert.
The Carnegie Endowment also publishes the magazine Foreign Policy which is available at the Library at call number JX 1 .F5 from 1970 (ground level floor) or full text through ProQuest from Spring 1995 -

International Peace Academy
This international nonprofit institution promotes the prevention and settlement of armed conflicts through policy research and development. Reports can be downloaded from this site from the"Publications" link on the main page.

Center for International and Strategic Studies
This nonpartisan organization based in Washington DC provides research on strategic policy on current and emerging global issues. Click on the "Issue" link on top toolbar for the full text of policy papers and reports of various lengths. "Publication" link provides bibliography of books published by CISS with abstracts.

Brookings Institution
This independent think tank was founded in 1916 and is based in Washington DC. Brookings has a wide ranging research and public education program with one emphasis being foreign policy. From the left tool bar, select "Research topics" and then "politics, global" for a list of current research by the Institution in this area. Another way to access full text: select "Publications" from left toolbar for a listing of policy briefs, reports, articles, etc which can be downloaded from the site.

World Peace Foundation
Created in 1910 this body seeks to advance peace through study, analysis and advocacy. Select "Publications" from the main toolbar to download WPF reports on a variety of international issues.

United Nations University
From main page, select "Publications", then "UNU Press" and then "Free full text publications" for free full text access to books published by UNU Press.

International Studies Association
This site offers an archive of conference papers from 2000.
