From time to time, the Mt. A Libraries acquire trial access to new electronic resources such as journal indexes, full-text databases and online encyclopedias. Resources to which the Mt. A community has temporary trial access are listed on this page.

Please note that most resources available on a trial basis are accessible on campus only.

Gale Virtual Reference Library

Gale Virtual Reference Library provides access to a large collection of reference works covering a wide range of subject areas, including Arts, Business, Environment, History, Literature, Religion, Science and Social Science.

Scopus is the world’s largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature covering the scientific, technical, medical and social sciences fields and arts and humanities.

Churchill Archive

A digital library comprising more than 800,000 pages of original documents, produced between 1874 and 1965, ranging from Winston S. Churchill’s personal correspondence to his official exchanges with kings, presidents, politicians, and military leaders.

Electronic Enlightenment is the online gateway to the eighteenth century, providing access to tens of thousands of letters from critical editions from leading scholarly and university presses around the globe.

Trial period ended 12 October 2012.


National Geographic Magazine Archive, 1888-1994

Offered through Gale, this database features the complete archive of the magazine up to the mid-1990s and includes every article, every photograph and every map, reproduced and fully searchable within the database.

Two-week trial ended on 26 September 2012.


BBC Monitoring Library

The BBC Monitoring Library provides subscribers with open source intelligence from the BBC’s unparalleled network. Articles are selected from traditional and new media worldwide, with over one hundred source languages being translated into English to provide a fully searchable digital current affairs resource.  BBC Monitoring reports news from state owned, independent and clandestine media sources in over 150 countries, in more than 100 languages to provide a distinctive and internationally respected news service.

Online access to 35,000 composers’ works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, piano, organ, voice, chorus, strings, winds, percussion and guitar. It includes the entire piano works of Chopin, all the songs of Schubert, all the organ music of J. S. Bach, and all the orchestra parts and scores of Beethoven


Birds of North America [The Mount Allison Libraries now subscribe to this resource]
BNA Online provides comprehensive life histories for each of the 716+ species of birds breeding in the USA (including Hawaii) and Canada including audio and video files. (off campus)

Renaissance and Reformation
Multidisciplinary and bilingual, The Renaissance and Reformation/Renaissance et Réforme is a peer-reviewed quarterly journal, with articles on all aspects of the Renaissance and Reformation period.

Early Modern Women: An Interdisciplinary Journal
Early Modern Women: An Interdisciplinary Journal is devoted to the interdisciplinary and global study of women and gender between 1400 and 1700. Each volume gathers essays on early modern women from every country and region, by scholars from a wide range of academic disciplines.

Confraternitas
Confraternitas is a refereed journal publishing brief articles, news and notes of interest to colleagues, notices of forthcoming conferences or papers, and general queries about medieval and Early Modern confraternities (pre-1700).

Quaderni d'italianistica
Quaderni d'italianistica is the official journal of the Canadian Society for Italian Studies. Publication is made possible by a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. A peer-reviewed journal, it appears twice yearly and publishes articles and book reviews in English, French, or Italian touching on any aspect of Italian literature from the origins to the present, Italian language, linguistics, and pedagogy.


Naxos Spoken Word Library
A collection of classic audiobook material featuring more than 300 authors, playwrights and poets and over 1,100 works and stories. Naxos Spoken Word Library Includes classic novels, plays and poetry, from medieval times to the twentieth century, with new titles added each month.

Gran enciclopedia de España
The Libraries have access on a trial basis to the electronic version of the comprehensive Encyclopedia of Spain.

Gran enciclopedia Iberoamericana
The Libraries have access on a trial basis to the electronic version of the comprehensive Encyclopedia of Latin America.

The trial period for these encyclopedias has now ended.


Business Source Elite
Business Source Elite provides full text coverage for over 1,000 business publications and economics journals, including nearly 500 peer-reviewed publications. Full text coverage begins as early as 1985 (varies by title) and includes titles such as Business Week, Forbes, Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, California Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Management Studies, and Journal of International Marketing, etc. More than 10,100 substantial company profiles from Datamonitor are also included.

Mount Allison Libraries now subscribe to Business Source Elite (beginning 1 April 2011).

Environment Complete
Environment Complete is comprised of over 2,200 domestic and international titles going back to 1888, including full text coverage for more than 920 journals (such as Environment, Ecologist, Conservation Biology). Environment Complete also provides full text access to more than 190 monographs, such as Encyclopedia of World Environmental History (3 volumes) and Advances in Water Treatment & Environmental Management.

Subjects covered include agriculture, ecosystem ecology, energy, renewable energy sources, natural resources, marine & freshwater science, geography, pollution & waste management, environmental technology, environmental law, public policy, social impacts, urban planning, and more.

Mount Allison Libraries now subscribe to Environment Complete (beginning 1 April 2011).

ART SUITE
WilsonWeb’s Art suite includes the following five databases: Art Full Text, Art Museum Image Gallery, Art Index Retrospective, Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, and Cinema Image Gallery. 

Art Full Text provides the same indexing as Art Index (currently available) and also offers full text of selected journals from 1997 on with expanded coverage of Latin American, Canadian, Asian and other non-Western art, new artists, contemporary art, exhibition reviews, and feminist criticism. 

Art Index Retrospective expands the period covered by Art Index (currently available, covers 1984 to the present) by providing a searchable index of art criticism and history published between 1929 – 1984.   

Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals covers literature and scholarship associated with architecture and design. 

The Art Museum Image Gallery is a rich digital resource of art images and related multimedia ranging from contemporary art, Native American and Inuit art, to ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian works, along with Japanese and Chinese works, gathered from the collections of distinguished museums around the world. 

The Cinema Image Gallery is one of the world’s finest and most comprehensive online collections of still images from movies, television and the entertainment industry. It presents the history of movie-making, still images of films in production, directors working on-set with the stars, set, costume and production design, as well as, hair and make-up shots and rare behind-the-scenes material.

Political Science Complete
Political Science Complete™ (PSC) contains full text for more than 500 journals, and indexing and abstracts for over 2,900 titles, (including top-ranked scholarly journals), many of which are unique to the product. PSC has a worldwide focus, reflecting the globalization of contemporary political discourse.

The database also features over 340 full-text reference books and monographs, and over 36,000 full-text conference papers, including those of the International Political Science Association. PSC includes a subject-specific thesaurus with over 17,500 terms (7,366 preferred and 10,175 non-preferred terms), to provide subject searching guidance to researchers. PSC's topical coverage includes: Comparative politics, Humanitarian issues, International relations, Law and legislation, Non-governmental organizations, and Political theory.

This trial ended 28 February 2011.


Naxos Video Library
As an extension of Naxos Music Library to which the Libraries subscribe, current access on a trial basis is available to the Naxos Video Library, which is an extensive streaming video library of classical music performances, opera, ballet, live concerts and documentaries.

The trial period has now ended.
