March 21 is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

On March 21st, 1960, peaceful demonstrators against apartheid were killed in Sharpeville, South Africa. Subsequently, in 1966, the United Nations declared March 21st as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Canada was one of the first countries to show its support, and in 1989 the first Canadian March 21st Campaign was held.

Respect. Equality. Diversity. These are the three fundamental Canadian values that support the March 21st Campaign each year. The point of each annual campaign is to make Canadians aware that racism exists in Canada, and to inspire each of us to take action against racial discrimination. For more than a decade, the March 21 Campaign has mobilized youth across Canada to rise up and make their voices heard in the fight against racism. More information about racism and March 21.

Yee Mon Khine (Mimi), an international student from Burma, has created a video in celebration of March 21 which highlights different opinions about racism within the Mount Allison University community. Mimi's video project is part of her internship as Multicultural Education Coordinator funded by the Purdy Crawford Teaching Centre.
