This listing,
which is not dated, but which appears to be in the 1850s, documents
the specific ways that farmers marked their sheep and cattle so as to
distinguish ownership when these animals were on common pasture. This
document identifies 457 farmers and this provides one measure of the
number of farmers operating in the Sackville area at this time. Of interest
is the fact that many of the entries involve the transfer of a mark
from one farmer to another. In this sense the document must have been
a living record that was updated as farmers came and went over a period
of years. |
