Professor Emeritus Carleton Elliott, beloved colleague, teacher, and friend, who taught in Mount Allison's Department of Music from 1951 until 1993, died on 24 August 2003. Composer, theorist, choral director, and administrator, Carleton was the founder and for several decades the conductor of the Mount Allison Conservatory Chorale. From 1967 until 1993 he was also the Director for the Mount Allison Local Centre Examinations in Music; in this role, and as an adjudicator at many music festivals, he was the genial first face of Mount Allison for generations of Maritime music students. As a composer, he wrote many choral works, though most of his published compositions are for young pianists, serving to introduce them to 20th-century compositional techniques.

In recognition of Carleton's special love for and contribution to choral music at Mount Allison, the Music Department's SATB chamber choir has been renamed the Elliott Chorale. The Chorale made its first public appearance under its new name at a celebration of Carleton held at the Mount Allison Chapel on 12 November 2003.

Carleton's dedication to teaching young musicians was especially strong. To honour this dedication, we are establishing, in his memory, the Carleton Elliott Fund. The aim of this fund is to endow an entrance scholarship to be awarded yearly to a student beginning music studies at Mount Allison. The Carleton Elliott Memorial Scholarship will help us to continue to attract and support talented students, to carry on the educational legacy of Carleton's many years at Mount Allison.

Carleton Elliott -- A Tribute, by Lydia Adams (BMus '75, BEd '76)

Hmm...these photos, from Carleton's own collection, were undated, so we've made our best guesses. Can you date these pictures more exactly? Are you in one of them? Can you identify your fellow students? If so, please e-mail us and help us fill the gaps in our information!
