CSTS - Rules
Like the Music Computer Lab, this studio is made possible through the
generosity of donors who believe
in your education
and trust you to honour this belief. It is up to us to use the
equipment responsibly, so it remains in good condition for other and future
users.
Authorized users
- The CSTS is for the use of faculty and Music programme students
who are working on university-related projects requiring MIDI, digital
audio and
digital video processing. It should not normally be used for general
computing, including basic music notation, computer-aided instruction,
or word processing.
The Music Computer Lab is for such uses.
- Students who wish to use the CSTS must obtain permission to do so
from a faculty member (usually Dr. Code, Dr. Crutchley, or Dr. Tucker).
Students granted such permission are listed in a (small-format, red) sign-out
binder
kept at the Music Library Circulation Desk.
Key and security
- The CSTS door must be kept locked. To use the room, sign its key out
at the Circulation Desk. While you have the key signed out, you are responsible
for it and for the security of the room. The key must not
be transferred
to another user. When you are finished with the room, be sure
to re-lock the door and sign the key back in.
Secure accounts on the computer
- Though there is a general-purpose password-free account on the CSTS
computer, users should generally have their own accounts, which
will allow them to store their files securely on the hard-drive. To obtain
an account,
see Dr. Crutchley or Dr. Tucker. You can also store
files (at least if they are not too large) on your University-account “M: drive”.
- Your account will not normally be an administrator’s account,
so you will not be able to install most software.
You will be able to configure
many things about the computer environment to suit
yourself, using System Preferences.
- When you have finished a session at the computer, remember to log
out of your account, or shut the computer down.
Use of equipment
- No food and drink (other than bottled water) is allowed in the CSTS.
Users who bring food and drink in the room risk losing their
authorization.
- Chairs, equipment, cables and manuals must not be removed from the
CSTS without permission of a faculty member.
- Please treat the software instruction manuals very carefully. Do not
write in them, even in pencil. Do not prop them open face
down, which ruins their spines.
- When you are finished, log out of your account or shut down the computer,
return manuals and cables to their proper
places, and leave the workstation tidy for the next user.
