Music Computer Lab - Storing Your Files

Storage on the Hard Drive of each computer

When you turn on a Lab computer, you normally log into a generic Guest account newly created for you on the computer you’re using. The computer expects you to store any files you create in this user’s “Home” area. However, when you log out of this Guest account, the account is deleted and all its files are erased. If you wish to keep you files, your easiest solution is to transfer them to a portable flash drive.

Secure file storage: connecting to your M: drive

Mount Allison has secure file storage set aside for each user: your secure space is called your "M: drive". When you log into a Windows computer here, your M: drive probably connects automatically. You can also easily connect to your M: drive from Mac computers, however:

  • In the Finder, use the “Go” menu to “Connect to Server”.
  • When the “Connect to Server” window opens, type the following into the Server Address space:

smb://home/your-email-name$

  • Use your e-mail name (without the “@mta.ca”) as your name. Don’t forget to type the $ at the end.
  • A log-in window will appear.
  • In place of the given Name, again type in your e-mail name (this time without the $). Type in your e-mail password. Hit “OK.”
  • A volume named "your-email-name$" will appear on the desktop: This is your M: drive. Double-click the icon to open it.

WARNING:

When you are finished, drag the icon for your M: drive to the Trash to disconnect the computer from your M: drive, or log out of the Guest account you're using on the computer. If you forget, the computer’s next user will have access to your M: drive!!!
