CHORAL PROGRAMS AT MOUNT ALLISON UNIVERSITY If you enjoy singing please look into joining one of our choirs. The choral programs at Mount Allison University include a small chamber choir, the Elliott Chorale and a large choir, the Choral Society.
The Elliott Chorale, conducted by Dr. Gayle h Martin, is an auditioned group of mixed voices who have strength in sight reading, are experienced singers, and have an avid interest in, and enthusiasm for, choral singing. The repertoire covered is from all periods, although an emphasis is placed on early and new music. This fall the repertoire includes various works by Robert Schumann as well as works by Swedish composers Tormis and Peterson-Berger. Auditions for the Chorale will be held on September 9, 3:30 - 5:30 pm. There will be sign-up sheets in the Conservatory foyer during the week prior to the auditions. Auditions will be held in office #228. Please prepare a short excerpt of an aria or similar material; there will also be a sight-reading skill test (an excerpt will be taken from the music for the fall).
Conducted by Dr. Martin, the Choral Society is a choir of mixed voices with a membership of approximately 70 members. Singers include students enrolled in the Music and other Mount Allison programs, faculty and staff members from the university community, as well as singers from surrounding areas. This fall the Choral Society will be singing movements from Vier doppelchorige Gesange, op. 141,by Robert Schumann; a large work for double choir. They will also perform excerpts from the Messiah in a concert in Brunton Hall on November 27. On March 19, 2011, the choral groups will combine with the Symphonic Band/Wind Ensemble to perform Cantica de Sancto Benedicto by Jacob de Haan as well as works by Monteverdi, Schutz and Gabrieli.
Choral Society enthusiasts are invited to attend the first rehearsal on Tuesday, September 14, 7:00-9:30 pm in the Choral Room. Please bear in mind that your commitment to these choral ensembles is for a full academic year. If you have any questions please write to: ghmartin@mta.ca.
