Opera Workshop Tours
Since 2000, Mount Allison University’s Opera
Workshop has embarked
on a tour of high schools in the Maritime region. Each spring, members
of the Opera Workshop troupe visit high schools with an entertaining and
educational presentation about opera. The troupe has visited schools throughout
New Brunswick, and has also toured in Nova Scotia (Truro, New Glasgow,
Sydney and Halifax) and throughout Prince Edward Island.
Dr.
Helen Pridmore, the director of Opera Workshop, explains, “The
purpose of our Tour is to introduce opera to high school students, to
show them that it is a beautiful and accessible art form with plot lines
that are relevant to today’s society.” The presentation
includes information about opera, as well as performances of operatic
arias and
scenes. In addition, exercises in vocal and dramatic improvisation,
and experiments with electronic processing of the voice, are frequently
included.
Participation by members of the high school audiences is encouraged!
