Mount Allison offers assistance to victims of Hurricane Katrina

SACKVILLE, NB — Mount Allison University is lending a helping hand by offering US students affected by Hurricane Katrina a chance to continue their studies. The University has announced that it can accept up to 50 to 100 students from the southern US this year at Canadian tuition rates, a 50 per cent discount from the international tuition rates. Residence accommodations are also available for all students at regular rates.
Mount Allison University President Dr. Kenneth Ozmon has tried to contact the Vice President of Louisiana State University since last week, to explore ways in which Mount A can assist in the relief effort. Dr. Ozmon says,“We have all been distressed to watch the great devastation in Louisiana. The Mount Allison community will do everything it can to assist students affected by the disaster. Mount Allison is a wonderful university with a great campus atmosphere. Given our connection culturally with the Acadian/Cajun diasphora, this area would be an ideal place for students to continue their studies, at least on a temporary basis.”
Manager of Admissions and Director of Continuous Learning Heather Patterson adds, “At this point we are able to accommodate up to 100 students and will be offering them our Canadian tuition rate for this year. We are working to fast-track the admissions process for these students. Residence rooms, at regular rates, will also be made available for students wishing to pursue their studies at Mount A.”
The University is also trying to make contact with the Canadian Embassy to see if they are co-ordinating any educational initiatives and, if so, if Mount Allison can be of assistance. Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick is one of the smallest liberal arts and science undergraduate universities in Canada, with an enrolment of around 2,250 students.
