Own a piece of Mount Allison history
Jun 12, 2008

SACKVILLE, NB — Two Mount Allison buildings — Baxter and Sprague Houses on Salem Street — will soon be for sale to the general public. These Craftsmen style houses no longer fill a function in the University’s facilities master plan.

The buildings will be listed for sale this summer and will be shown in an upcoming Open House. However, potential buyers don’t have to live on campus to purchase them. The successful homeowners will get to purchase a piece of history and move it to wherever they choose. Once the houses have been moved, the two lots will be used as green space, reducing Mount Allison’s environmental footprint.

“Baxter and Sprague Houses have had a long history at Mount Allison and have most recently been used as a studio space for fine arts students and the Student Health Centre,” says Michelle Strain, Mount Allison’s director of administrative services. “With the opening of the new Student Centre, which will include health facilities, and with plans underway for a new Fine and Performing Arts Centre, we simply don’t need the space anymore. Selling the homes and moving them allows us to preserve their historical significance and see them used as family homes once again, while reducing our impact on the environment.”

There will be an open house for interested buyers on Monday, June 16. (15 and 17 Salem Street). Viewing time will be 9 to 11 a.m. The deadline for Offers to Purchase will be Monday, June 23 at 4 p.m. and must be submitted to Administrative Services (Facilities Management Building). Houses must be removed in July or August. For further information please contact Michelle Strain, director of administrative services, Mount Allison University, tel: (506) 364-2249 (
