Oct 26, 2005

SACKVILLE, NB — George and Terry Goulet will speak about Louis Riel and the Northwest Rebellion and their book The Trial of Louis Riel: Justice and Mercy Denied at 7 p.m. on November 1 in the Owens Art Gallery, Mount Allison University campus. There is no admission charge and everyone is welcome to attend.

George Goulet, was born at St. Boniface, Manitoba and now lives in Calgary. He is a registered member of the Métis Nation of Alberta. Goulet holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba, a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Manitoba Law School, and a Master of Laws degree from the University of Toronto. His wife Terry was born in Calgary. She is a graduate of the University of Manitoba and has worked as a paralegal and legal editor.

George Goulet has a direct connection to the Red River Rebellion and Louis Riel. His great grandfather Pierre Delorme was in Riel’s Provisional Government in Manitoba in 1869-70, and served as a Member of Parliament from Provencher after the province entered Confederation. He was also elected to the Manitoba Legislature and served in the provincial cabinet.

George and Terry have collaborated on other works and are presently writing a book to be called The Métis - Memorable Events and Memorable Personalities. The Trial of Louis Riel provides a critical legal and political analysis of Riel’s sensational 1885 trial for high treason. The Mount Allison lecture will focus on this subject and is jointly sponsored by the Centre for Canadian Studies, the Aboriginal Community Development Centre, and the Marjorie Young Bell Distinguished Speaker’s Fund.
