Dr. Nagaraja Rao to speak on the art and architecture of India, Oct 30-31

SACKVILLE, NB — The Mount Allison Distinguished Speaker Series is please to present Dr. Nagaraja Rao, former head of the Archaeological Survey of India and current head of Dhvanyaloka Centre for Indian Studies (DCIS), Mysore (the home of the new Shastri-Mount Allison Summer Program in India). Dr. Rao will be giving two presentations at Mount Allison on the art and architecture of India. The talks will take place October 30 and 31 in the Crabtree Auditorium and begin at 4:30 p.m. each day.
Dr. Rao’s first talk, on Monday, October 30, is entitled The Art and Architecture of Karnataka (India). The lecture will discuss the contribution of the Karnataka region to the field of Indian architecture. It will begin with a discussion of the sixth century Rock Cave temples and include examples of architecture built in the region up to the 16th century when the Vijayanagara Empire collapsed. The lecture will take place at 4:30 p.m. with a social gathering prior to the talk at 4:15 p.m.
The second lecture, on Tuesday, October 31 at 4:30 p.m. is called The Art and Architecture of the Vijayanagara Empire. The lecture will discuss the art and architecture of the Vijayanagara Empire (1336-1565) and its impact on the subsequent historical and cultural development of South India. This will include a virtual tour of the city of Vijayanagara (now called Hampi, a UNESCO world heritage site), where Dr. Rao has undertaken extensive conservation work, and which the students of new summer program in India will visit. A social gathering will also precede this lecture at 4:15 p.m.
On Wednesday, November 1, at 7 p.m., in Avard Dixon 118, Dr. Rao will be part of a presentation to students and other interested members of the community on the new Shastri-Mount Allison Summer Program in India (www.mta.ca/india).
