SACKVILLE, NB — The second concert of the Performing Arts Series at Mount Allison University features the exciting young Canadian pianist Lucille Chung, in a solo recital on the magnificent Steinway piano in Convocation Hall. The recital will take place on Friday, October 19, at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and $13 for students, and are available at the door.
Lucille Chung has been acclaimed for her impassioned and refined performances “combining vigour and suppleness with natural eloquence and elegance” (Le Soir, 1995). She made her debut with the Montréal Symphony at the age of 10 and was invited by Maestro Charles Dutoit to join the orchestra as featured soloist during their Asian Tour in 1989. She has since appeared as soloist with orchestras around the world, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Moscow Virtuosi, and the orchestras of Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Budapest and Weimar. Last year, Ms. Chung was awarded the prestigious Canada Council for the Arts Virginia Parker Prize, and in 1993 received the Outstanding Achievement Award for Artists from the Governor General of Canada. She is currently a Fellow of the Accademia Pianistica (Incontri col Maestro) di Imola with Giovanni Valentini.
Debut Atlantic is pleased to present the Thrifty Car Rental Presentation of the recital by Ms. Chung. She will be performing Beethoven’s Variations on a Theme by Sussmayr, Op.76; the Brahms Klavierstücke, Op. 76, and Liszt’s Sonata in b minor. Also on the program is the premiere of Sackville resident Alasdair MacLean's new work Daft Mallow’s Secret. This piece is the first commissioned work for Debut Atlantic’s new Composer in Residence program. Dr. MacLean was the first Composer-in-Residence for Symphony Nova Scotia, and has a growing reputation as one of eastern Canada’s most accomplished composers.
Upcoming performances in the Series include the Montréal Lyric Opera with a performance of Mozart’s opera Cosi fan tutte on November 1, and Canadian cellist Denise Djokic in recital with pianist Jeffrey Neufeld on November 23. The Series continues in 2002 with a concert by the Elmer Iseler Singers on February 8, a recital by soprano Measha Brueggergosman and pianist Robert Kortgaard on March 13, and the ballet Coppélia, presented by Ballet Jörgen, on April 5.
