SACKVILLE, NB — News of the creation of Sobey Performance Scholarships was enthusiastically received at Mount Allison University on March 12. Janis Sobey-Hames, chair of The David and Faye Sobey Foundation announced that The David and Faye Sobey Foundation and The Sobey Foundation are contributing a combined total of $500,000 to be endowed for scholarships that will be awarded to returning students at Mount Allison.

“The Sobey Performance Scholarships are intended to create new opportunities to recognize and reward students who excel at Mount Allison in the upper years of their degree,” says Janis Sobey-Hames. “We hope the Sobey Performance Scholarships inspire students for generations to come as they continue the rewarding and life-long journey of learning.”

“We are delighted to receive this generous contribution to our JUMP Mount Allison campaign,” says Mount Allison University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Robert Campbell. “Scholarships and bursaries continue to be a major priority at our university. They allow us to continue to attract and retain the best and brightest students, regardless of their personal financial situations.”

The first scholarship, which will be awarded in September 2008, will be given to students who attain high academic achievement and are also successful at integrating extracurricular activities into their lives.

Each year Mount Allison awards more than $2 million in scholarships and bursaries. Approximately half of that amount goes to entrance scholarships and the other half to upper-class students.
