SACKVILLE, NB - Mount Allison University recently celebrated the outstanding contributions of its outgoing Chancellor, while welcoming both a new Chancellor and a new Chair of the Board of Regents. At its meeting on October 20, Mount Allison's Board of Regents appointed Mr. J. James Keith as the University's new Chancellor, and Mr. J. Robert Winters, Q.C., as the new Board Chair. Both appointments are effective January 1, 2001. Mr. John Bragg, President of Oxford Frozen Foods, Ltd., was also appointed Chair of the Executive Committee, (effective January 1, 2001).
Earlier in 2000, Mr. Purdy Crawford announced that he would step down as Mount Allison's Chancellor at the end of this year. Mr. Crawford served Mount Allison for 15 years, as a Board member, Chairman and, most recently, Chancellor. He was honoured with a special dinner on October 19, 2000.
"During his 15 years of service to Mount Allison University, Purdy Crawford has not only shared his vision for a Mount Allison that can be the best in North America, and one that is accessible for all students, but he also worked very hard to make that vision a reality," said President Ian Newbould. "From his personal support in the form of bursaries for students in financial need, to his outstanding leadership of our successful $20-million capital campaign, Mount Allison will benefit for decades to come from his legacy ."
Although new to their respective roles, Chancellor-elect Jim Keith and Chair-elect Robert Winters are certainly no strangers to Mount Allison. Jim Keith has been a Mount Allison Regent for 14 years, and Chair of the Board of Regents since 1996. From Berwick, NS, he has spent much time on the Mount Allison campus, both in service to the University, and as a proud father (four of his five children are Mount Allison graduates). Mr. Keith has had a long and distinguished career as an educator, having been a school teacher, principal and superintendant. He was a key supporter of Campaign Mount Allison and the University's previous Universitas Campaign.
Robert Winters is Counsel to the law firm of Burchell MacDougall of Truro, NS, and Chairman of Napwick Holdings Limited. In addition to his nine years as a Mount Allison Regent, Mr. Winters was a leadership donor to Mount Allison's capital campaign, and was also a key supporter of Mount Allison's previous Universitas Campaign. He is Chair of the External Relations Committee of the Board of Regents, is a Director of High Liner Foods Inc., and sits on a number of other corporate, educational and economic development boards. Both of his children are Mount Allison graduates.
"While Mount Allison has flourished under the direction of Purdy Crawford, the University looks forward to the contributions of its new Chancellor, Mr. Jim Keith, and Chair of the Board, Mr. Robert Winters. Both of these gentlemen have already distinguished themselves in service to this University. We are fortunate to have such able and dedicated individuals in these important leadership roles," said President Newbould.
