Mount Allison University Fitness Centre — A healthy community resource
Community Open House set for June 28
SACKVILLE, NB — Located on the ground floor of Mount Allison University’s Wallace McCain Student Centre, the Fitness Centre may just be one of the best-kept secrets for fitness and lifestyle resources in Sackville. Open to everyone, not just the University community, the Fitness Centre features state-of-the-art equipment and personalized fitness training all year round.
Gaétan Richard, Mount Allison’s Fitness Centre co-ordinator says, “The Fitness Centre, and Mount Allison’s Athletic Centre are truly community resources. Memberships and day passes are available to anyone who wants to use our facilities, including various classes and personal training.”
Richard, a Mount Allison graduate and former Football Mountie is also a certified fitness trainer, offering one-on-one sessions to interested community members.
“We work with people to provide individualized fitness programs. There’s no set formula, everyone has different needs and we help people find what works best for their fitness goals.”
But it’s more than just designing an exercise program. Richard says, “A good fitness routine is part of a lifestyle change. We work to help people find the resources to make smarter lifestyle decisions, directing them to additional resources in the community, as well as those in our facility.”
Sackville business owner and Dorchester resident Amanda Feindel can attest to the benefits of these resources. She began the personal training program to assist with recovery from a car accident this spring. “I had never worked with a personal trainer before, but my time with Gaétan has been a great experience. He has taught me a lot, working out a personalized program that I can now do on my own — checking in with him occasionally.”
She says, “I’ve seen a big change in my energy level since starting and it’s nice to have this time set aside for myself. The Fitness Centre is just seconds from my business too, so I can easily fit the 45-minute workout into my routine.”
This aspect of community involvement is one Mount Allison’s athletics and recreation department is working to build on this coming academic year with plans for a health seminar series that will be open to the public.
Group classes for both students and community members are offered all year long in the Fitness Centre. The facility has two certified fitness instructors, as well as several students, offering classes in a number of areas including cardio, dance, yoga, and the ever popular Zumba and Fit Camps. All classes are open to the public and this year Fitness Centre staff worked to offer classes for both students and community members to accommodate various schedules and ensure as much access as possible.
The Mount Allison Fitness Centre is open to all community members, but on Tuesday, June 28, the facility will hold a free open house event from 6-9 p.m. Members of the Mount Allison, Sackville, and surrounding communities are welcome to come try out a fitness class and equipment, and learn more about the personal training and other programs offered through the Fitness Centre.
