Mount Allison University announces new President

SACKVILLE, NB — The Board of Regents of Mount Allison University has appointed Dr. Robert Campbell as the next University President. Dr. Campbell has recently completed a term as Dean of Arts at Wilfrid Laurier University and will begin his new position on July 1, 2006 for a five-year term.

Brian Johnston, Chairman of the Board and the Presidential Search Committee, said, “We are pleased with our selection. Dr. Campbell’s commitment to and experience in liberal arts and science education is an ideal fit for Mount Allison University.”

Dr. Robert Campbell said, “I am honoured to be chosen as President for such a distinguished institution. I look forward to working with and becoming part of the Mount Allison University community.”

Current President, Dr. Kenneth Ozmon, will complete his term on June 30. Dr. Ozmon says of this new appointment, “Dr. Campbell brings a great deal of experience and enthusiasm to Mount Allison. I have no doubt he will advance the outstanding reputation of the University.”

Dr. Campbell was born in Montreal and was educated at Loyola College High School. He is a graduate of Trent University (1974), the University of Toronto (1976), and the London School of Economics, where he received his Ph.D. (1980). He taught at Trent between 1980 and 2000. He began at Wilfrid Laurier in 2000, as its first Dean of Arts. His areas of research and teaching interest and specialization include Canadian Politics, Political Economy, and Comparative Public Policy. He has also been active in Canadian Studies, and has served in several senior administrative positions at Trent, as Provost and Dean of Arts and Science, and then as Vice President Academic. He is married to Dr. Christl Verduyn and they have four children. Dr. Verduyn is the Director of the Canadian Studies Program at Wilfrid Laurier University. Dr. Campbell is currently on an administrative leave in the Netherlands.

Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick is one of the smallest liberal arts and science undergraduate universities in Canada, with an enrolment of around 2,250 students.
