After hearing a reading by poet Roy Campbell at Mount Allison University, Colville finds the inspiration for Horse and Train in the line, “Against a regiment I oppose a brain and a dark horse against an armoured train”. The location in the painting is the train track running through the marshes at Aulac just outside of Sackville, New Brunswick.
