Daniel Vogel: Siftor and My Name is Owen

8 March to 28 April

Artist and computer scientist Daniel Vogel presents two new, large-scale digital artworks revealing aspects of the Owens Art Gallery itself. Siftor harnesses subtle body movements of gallery visitors to interact with a wall-sized visualization of thousands of works of art in the Owens collection. A window projection, entitled My Name is Owen, is a pseudo-random text forming a one-sided conversation with a personification of the Owens website. Leveraging Vogel's inter-disciplinary practices, these installations also function as data gathering experiments exploring emerging research questions in Human-Computer Interaction. Daniel Vogel is currently a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow in the Cheriton School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo. In conjunction with the exhibition the Owens will publish documentation of the installation and Dan's research, with an essay by guest writer Susan Edelstein.
