Celebrating Teaching Excellence at Mount Allison University . . .

THE 2013 J.E.A. CRAKE TEACHING AWARDS
Nomination Deadline: December 7, 2012

We are celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Crake Foundation this year!

Dr. John Ernest Alexander Crake was Professor of Classics at Mount Allison University from 1946 to 1976. The Foundation which bears his name provides support for those engaged in study, teaching and scholarship in the Humanities particularly, but not exclusively, at Mount Allison University. Read more about the Crake Foundation, its history, and its work here.

The Crake Foundation offers up to three teaching awards each year to be made in the Faculties of Arts, Social Sciences, and Science, with no more than one award in each Faculty. These awards are intended to recognize and encourage teaching excellence within Mount Allison University. Nominations are invited from any member of the University community, including students.

PLEASE NOTE:
If you are uncertain which teaching award (the Tucker or the Crake) is the better fit for your proposed candidate, please consult the descriptions of both awards and feel free to consult the PCTC director.

Criteria
The selection criteria include
• Evidence of excellent teaching
• Evidence of participation in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning activities
(Examples of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning may include innovations in teaching; participation in PCTC programmes; academic advising; attendance or presentations at local, regional, or national teaching events.)

Eligibility
All teachers (including part-time and limited-term appointments) who are members of the relevant departments and programs and who have not held a teaching award in the previous five years are eligible for the Crake Award for their Faculty. To check on eligibility, please view the list of previous Crake winners (at the bottom of this page); for the Herbert and Leota Tucker Award winners, please click here.

Nomination
Nominations are invited from any member of the university community: faculty, staff, students, or alumni.

To nominate a faculty member:

  • Check with your nominee to ensure that he or she is eligible and accepts your nomination.
  • Check that he/she is willing to compile and submit a dossier in support of the nomination. (Click here for details)
  • Write a letter, addressed to Dr. Karen Grant, Provost and Vice-President, Academic and Research, in which you provide the reasons why the nominee merits this award.

Nominations should be submitted electronically by December 7, 2012 to:
Maria Smith, Provost's Office: mlsmith@mta.ca

Please use as the subject line of your e-mail Crake Award Nomination.

Selection Committee
The Selection Committee will comprise

The Director of the Purdy Crawford Teaching and Learning Centre (Chair, non-voting)
Three previous recipients of the J.E.A. Crake Teaching Award (appointed by the Provost).

Prior to selection, the Committee will seek input about the nominees from their respective Academic Dean.

The Award
The recipient of each Crake Award will be recognized at Spring Convocation. Crake recipients will receive $2000, half of which will go directly to the individual (or to the individual’s Professional Development Reimbursement account). The other half is to be used on a teaching project of the award holder’s design. The teaching project should be undertaken within two years of receiving the award.

There is no limit to the number of times an individual may be nominated, and re-nominations are warmly welcomed. Nominees who are not successful in 2013 will automatically be invited to let their names stand for a second year with the option to submit an up-to-date dossier.
