Tech High and Tech Low: Using a Broad
Range of Strategies
to Engage Students
by Colin Laroque, Geography & Environment and Toni Roberts,
PCTC
Engaging students in learning is becoming more and more difficult.
There is no question that as educators, we are in competition
for students' attention, from YouTube to online chatting and
other forms of entertainment and ‘edutainment.’
It is not just the content but also the medium with which
we are in competition.
To address this challenge, we must make the best use of
technology and pedagogical strategies. While technology itself
is not the answer to student disengagement, the judicious
marriage of sound pedagogy with the appropriate technology
may be.
This session gave a rich array of strategies and tools to
enhance student engagement. From low-tech options such as
"Pair, Share, Square," to using and creating videos
to give students real examples (such as weather or geographical
phenomena), the two presenter of this very practical session
offered participants many ways to engage students with and
without technology. Take a look at the accompanying presentation
and choose the strategies that make most sense for your courses.
