Scholarship
of Teaching & Learning
There will be no funding for projects in 2009
SUMMARY
The
Senate Committee on Teaching and Learning invites proposals for projects
that will contribute to the Scholarship
of Teaching and Learning at Mount
Allison University. This call is
for projects that will commence in May and be completed by
August 31, 2008.
All
current faculty members, academic staff, Student Life counsellors,
and librarians at Mount Allison
University are eligible to apply for project funding from
the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning grants.
Each
Scholarship of Teaching & Learning project must involve
one Mount Allison student
in active pedagogical research or discovery. To be eligible for Summer
Project Funding, students must be
returning to Mount Allison in Fall, 2008.
Limitations
and Duration of Awards, Summer 2008
Project
awards may be valued up to, but not exceeding,
$2400.
Every year, the Committee receives more requests than it can fund.
Depending
on the number and quality of proposals received, then, it is
often necessary to limit the number of grants and the amount
of individual awards.
No
more than 10 percent of the grant may be used
as funding for the purchase of essential materials
and services
which are not available from other sources on campus:
for example, from the Library or Computing Services.
Scholarship of Teaching & Learning Grants are not
given solely for the purpose of purchasing equipment, but to support
innovative, sustained
inquiry
into
teaching and learning.
Exclusions
(Please review carefully):
- "Miscellaneous" expenses
are not covered.
-
The awards are not given for catering, travel
or field trips.
-
Incidental
printing costs are not covered.
-
Printing costs may be granted, but only when the project's
main purpose is the creation
of a print document.
Please
note that the
selection committee will allocate funds first to new applicants
and new ideas. Proposals
for "repeat" projects, that is those
which have been funded in the past in much the same format,
are strongly discouraged and are unlikely to be funded.
Please check the list of recently funded projects. Click
here for details.
Student
Involvement & Learning Objectives
The
proposed project should involve one
Mount Allison student.
Projects
should provide
one student with a valuable learning experience, contributing
to the solution or exploration of a teaching issue. The
student should be engaged in meaningful work,
not
repetitive
tasks. Therefore, the project leader(s) should clearly document the
learning objectives for the project.
Student
Remuneration
The
student stipend is based on an hourly rate of $10, including
vacation pay ($9.62 plus 38 cents vacation pay), and the student
working 20 hours per week. Students must submit
monthly progress
reports
to
the
PCTC.
You may hire more than one student for the project;
however, the grant will not exceed 240 hours of student work.
Eligibility
To
be eligible for Summer Project Funding, students must be
returning to Mount Allison in Fall, 2008.
Application
Deadline and Decisions
The
submission deadline for applications is: Tuesday April
29, 2008

The Senate Committee on Teaching
and Learning serves as the selection committee for SoTL grants.
To ensure transparency, consistency and
fairness in the allocation of funding across campus, two ex-officio
consultants may be invited to provide advice
to the selection
committee:
the Director
of Leadership Mount Allison and the Vice-President (Academic) of
SAC.
