CanCore. Canadian Core Learning Object Metadata Application Profile
"This site is the official home for documents, presentations and other resources related to the the Canadian Core Learning Object Metadata Application Profile. The CanCore Profile is intended to facilitate the interchange of records describing educational resources and the discovery of these resources both in Canada and beyond its borders." More information about CanCore is given on its FAQ page.

Robson, Robby. Learning Object Tutorial.
A brief introduction to learning object concepts. It examines the pros and cons of the learning-object approach to sharing information, intoduces the Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM), a specification for standadizing the reusability and interoperability of learning content, and points to sources of further information.

Wiley, David, ed. The Instructional Use of Learning Objects. (Agency for Instructional Technology and the Association for Educational Communications and Technology, 2002)
This is the online, full-text, Open Public License version of the book. Its 12 chapters are divided into 5 major sections: Learning objects explained, Learning objects and constructivist thought, Learning objects and people, Learning objects implementation war stories, and Learning objects and the future.

Learning Object Repositories and Projects

BELLE. Broadband Enabled Lifelong Learning Environment.
A project of several insitutions, funded by the CANARIE Learning Program, to "develop a prototype educational learning repository." A search of the repository leads you to CAREO.

CAREO. Campus Alberta Repository of Educational Objects.
CAREO is a research prototype project of the Universities of Calgary, Alberta, and Athabasca, supported by CANARIE and Alberta Learning.

CLOE. Co-operative Learning Object Exchange.
"A collaborative project of fifteen Ontario universities to develop an innovative infrastructure for joint development of multimedia-rich learning resources"

eduSource Canada. Canadian Network of Learning Object Repositories
"eduSource is a national consortium of learning institutions, universities and private sector partners, who will create the first pan-Canadian bilingual testbed of linked interoperable learning object repositories." It is a project of the CANARIE Learning Program.

MERLOT. Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching.
"MERLOT is a free and open resource designed primarily for faculty and students of higher education. Links to online learning materials are collected here along with annotations such as peer reviews and assignments."

SPLASH
SPLASH is a peer-to-peer application allowing individuals to share learning objects in the Portal for Online Objects for Learning (POOL). POOL, in turn, is a project to develop an infrastructure for sharing learning object repositories. The project is being developed by a consortium of agencies based in British Columbia.
