Marburg is one of Germany's oldest university cities, with a tradition dating back to the ninth century. Spared much of the destruction of war, Marburg is one of Europe's best preserved townscapes, with its hill-top fortress castle, half-timbered houses, and town walls documenting in stone the medieval Gothic, Renaissance, Reformation, and Romantic periods. Today, it is a small city with a thriving student culture. More than 83 thousand people call Marburg home, including 18,000 students who attend the city's world-class university. Founded in 1527 by Philip the Magnanimous as the first Protestant university, the university has attracted a large number of famous professors and students including Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm who compiled the famous collection of fairy tales, and Boris Pasternak, author of "Doctor Zhivago". Each year several Mount Allison students join 1400 other
international students from over eighty countries for a memorable year
of study at Marburg University. The Referat fuer auslaendische Studierende
und Auslandsstudien assists international students in all aspects of the
year abroad study programme. The university offers courses in a variety
of disciplines in the sciences, arts, and humanities. Language of instruction
is normally German although students will find courses taught in English
and other languages as well. Interested students should have some ability
to speak the German language or be willing to participate in the intensive
orientation program in German language and culture provided by the university
to make the most of their year of study abroad. Philipps Universität At a Glance:
