The University of Otago, New Zealand's first university, is located in Dunedin. Dunedin is a coastal city situated in the southern part of the South Island. The population is 115,000 - approximately 20% of whom are connected to the University - making it truly a University City. Founded in 1869 the University is recognized internationally
for its excellence in teaching and research. There are over 15,000 students,
with more than 2,000 studying at the postgraduate level. The University
is strongly committed to a policy of international education. It is home
to over 850 international students, from more than 35 countries, enrolled
in a very wide range of courses at all levels of study. Undergraduate
courses consist of lectures, tutorials, and in some subjects, practical
classes each week. Methods of assessing include semester or end of year
examinations as well as essays, practical work and tests throughout the
year.
