Registration: Frequently Asked Questions

•Where do I find which courses are being offered this year?

Please consult the Academic Timetable or search for classes using Connect@MTA to find out exactly which courses are offered this year, when and where they occur, and the name of the instructor.

Note:Not all courses listed in the Academic Calendar are offered every year.

What’s full time?

At Mount Allison, 15 credits (5 courses) per term is considered a standard course load for a full time student in fall and winter terms.

What’s part time?

Students are considered part time if they are registered for a maximum of 6 credits.

•In how many courses must I enroll if I have a Mount Allison University Scholarship?

As a first year student you need 30 credits- 15 in both fall and winter terms. Refer to your scholarship letter for details, and contact financialaid@mta.ca with questions.

•I would like to take more than five classes per term (Overloading).

Generally, first year students are not permitted to register in more than five classes each term. However, you can apply to the Dean of your degree program and apply for permission to Overload.

As outlined in the Academic Calendar in Section 10.3.5, students in years 2 and 3 who are in Good Standing may register for up to 18 credits (6 classes) per term, provided they have attained a GPA of at least 2.0 in the previous term. Students who have not achieved a GPA of 2.0 in the previous term must apply to the appropriate Academic Dean in order to register for extra classes.

Students with fourth-year standing who are in Good Standing are automatically eligible to register for up to 18 credits (6 classes) per term. Students who do not meet this requirement must apply to the appropriate Academic Dean in order to register for extra classes.
The Dean's Permission Request form can be found at http://www.mta.ca/administration/sas/forms.html

When is the deadline to register for courses?

You should be registered for 30 credits, 15 credits (5 courses) in each of the Fall and Winter terms, by the time classes begin in September to ensure a full course load for the coming year. All deadlines and major events are listed in the Academic Calendar- Section 2.2

•Should I register for Winter term courses as well as Fall term courses using Connect@MTA?

Yes, you should register for Winter term courses as well as Fall term courses when registration opens.

•What if I am a transfer student with advance credits from another institution, or have received advanced standing for previous study (e.g. IB, AP, CEGEP)?

Transfer students should refer to the Academic Calendar, Section 3.10.1.  For more information on the progress of your transfer credit assessment please contact the Registrar’s Office at transfercredits@mta.ca. Documentation for transfer credit evaluation will be processed as quickly as possible.

•Tell me more about Full-year Courses.

Full-year courses take place over both terms. Any course number that ends with a “0” indicates a Full-year course. On Connect@MTA, these courses are divided into two sections using the letter F (Part 1-Fall) or the letter W (Part 2-Winter) immediately following the course number. You must successfully complete both Part 1 and 2 to obtain the credit value. The final grade for the full-year course will be recorded on Part 2. Example: CANA 4600 A (Year-long course) is indicated in the first semester as CANA 4600F A (0 credits) and in the second semester as CANA 4600W A (6 credits).

For fee administrative purposes students enrolled in full year courses will be charged for half the credit value per semester.

•Tell me more about Compulsory Labs/Tutorials.

In addition to the regular class, a number of courses involve a lab or tutorial component. This primarily serves to divide the class into smaller groups for more focused instruction, course work or discussion. In Connect@MTA and in the Academic Timetable, compulsory lab are listed below the course and end with the letter “L”.
For example:
3346 GENS 1401 A the Physical Environment
3347 GENS 140L 1 Lab: The Physical Environment
3698 GENS 140L 2 Lab: The Physical Environment

Labs may have more than one section listed. Students are required to register for only one and can choose whichever section fits best in their schedule.

Placement tests

FRENCH:  Students are required to take a French Placement test available online through the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.Students will receive email notification of the appropriate level of French as determined by the department. Students must then email reghelp@mta.ca to express their desire to be registered and specify which section they would prefer. Student will then be manually registered by RegHelp.

MATH:   Students wishing to enroll in Math 1111 must complete a written placement test at the beginning of the academic term. The test is normally conducted during the first week of classes during the lab period. In the meantime, students may register for MATH 1111, however, when the results of the placement test are calculated, students who do not achieve the appropriate score will be removed from MATH 1111.
Students enrolled in MATH 1011 are encouraged to take the placement test. The test will assist you in determining if you are taking the correct math course. Both courses are offered in the same time slots and therefore should not disrupt your existing schedule if you must switch courses. Please contact the Mathematics Department for more questions concerning Math Placement. Sample placement tests are available via the Mathematics Departmental Website.

•What's a co-requisite?

Some departments offer courses that must be taken at the same time as another course.  Details on these will be given in the Academic Calendar course descriptions for the courses.

For example:
ENGL 1501/1701/1801 can be taken in conjunction with ENGL 1201. However, you cannot take ENGL 1501/1701/1801 without taking (or having already taken) ENGL 1201.

If you want to register for co-requisite courses, email reghelp!

•I want to take a first year fine arts course or a first year music course but I am not a BFA or a BMUS student. I am unable to register for the course via Connect@MTA. It says I need instructor's consent to register for the course.

The course you are attempting to register for is a restricted course. You should contact the Department Head of the appropriate Department to obtain permission to take the course.

•Pre-registration for Upper Year courses

Some departments require students to pre-register for upper year (3000 and 4000 level) courses.  Check with your department for details.  Students who participate in pre-registration will be manually registered in these classes by reghelp. You can see which classes you are registered in by checking Connect@MTA.

•I would like to obtain departmental permission/instructor's consent to take a course.

To obtain permission to enroll in a course you must take the following steps:

1) Contact the appropriate Department Head for pre-requisite issues, or contact the Course Instructor if instructor's consent is required. For example, if you lack the required pre-requisites for an upper-level Anthropology course, you must contact the Anthropology Department Head to obtain permission.

2) When contacting the Department Head via e-mail, make sure to provide the following: your name, student number, the course code (e.g., POLS-1000), and section. You may also write some details as to why you wish to take the course.

3) Once you obtain approval, the Department Head will make the necessary arrangements with the Registration Helpdesk and have them register you for the course. They normally notify us by "cc"-ing us on their e-mail response to your request.

4) The Registration Helpdesk staff will register you for these courses, and confirm via email when you have been registered. You will not be able to register for these courses yourself. You will be able to see your revised class schedule on your Connect@MTA account.

•I can't register for a winter course because I am taking the prerequisite(s) for it in the fall.

This situation happens if you register for all your courses (both fall and winter) all at once.
You do not have to wait until you complete the prerequisite course in the fall in order to register for your winter courses. In fact, it is not recommended that you wait till January to register for winter courses.
To work around this problem, you should register in two stages:
1) Register for all your fall courses.
2) Once you have successfully registered click My class schedule from the Connect for Students menu and verify your fall course registrations. After verifying that you are now registered in the prerequisite course in the fall term, go back to the main menu, and begin registering for your winter courses.

•I am unable to register for a course I have prerequisites for.

Contact the Registration Helpdesk by submitting your request by emailing reghelp or by calling 1-866-890-6367. Make sure to provide a detailed description of the problem. If it is difficulty with Connect@MTA, include any warnings/error messages you received.

•What if I have a question concerning Registration procedures that is not answered here?

Contact the Registration Helpdesk by emailing reghelp or by calling 1-866-890-6367.  If you’re on campus, come see us on the second floor of the Wallace McCain Student Centre in the Registrar’s Office.
