English Academic Support in Your First Year

Final Exam Accommodations

Eligible international students may apply to receive final exam accommodations such as extra time and/or the use of a dictionary. Forms can be picked up from the International Advisor’s office. All completed request forms must be submitted to the International Advisor in compliance with the standard “Application for Exam Accommodation” deadlines posted by the Registrar’s Office. Final approval for any exam accommodation(s) rests exclusively with the professor. Please note that final exam accommodation is offered as a non-guaranteed service by International & Student Affairs at the sole discretion of the supervising professor.

Who is eligible for final exam accommodations?

If you are studying at Mount Allison on a student visa and are paying international fees AND you are in your first calendar year in Canada AND you are a non-native English speaker AND you were not educated previously in English at the high-school or university levels, you are eligible to apply for final exam accommodation. If you do not satisfy one of the above criteria, you are not eligible to apply for final exam accommodation. For more information, please speak directly with the International Advisor.

Where do I write my exams?

If you are approved for a final exam accommodation, you will write your exam in a separate location under the supervision of an International & Student Affairs staff member.

How much extra time will I receive?

The amount of extra time on your exam depends on your professor and the exam that you are writing. Extra time may be as little as 10 minutes or as much as “time and a half.”

Why are exam accommodation requests sometimes denied?

The International Advisor may not accept your application if it is received after the posted deadline or if you don’t meet the criteria for exam accommodation allowances (see above). The professor may not approve your application if he/she feels that you have sufficient ability in English to complete the exam in the allotted time. The final decision always rests with the professor. In such cases, you will have to write your exam with the rest of the class.
