Health Insurance

According to University regulations, all students must possess valid insurance coverage for the duration of their time at Mount Allison. You can bring insurance from home or you can arrange for insurance through Mount Allison’s Student Union (otherwise known as the Students’ Administrative Council – or “the SAC”).

The SAC offers two levels of insurance, a base "accident/emergency plan" and a supplementary "extended health and dental plan." International students will automatically be charged for both plans. Canadian students – who already have access to provincial medicare coverage – will only be charged for the supplementary plan. The cost of the "accident/emergency plan" is $495 for 12 months (and will appear on your MTA account as "International Student Health Insurance, SAC”). The cost of the supplementary plan is $249 for 12 months. When combined, the two plans offer international students maximum coverage for emergency and non-emergency medical treatment. For a complete description of what each plan covers, please visit the "Health & Dental" page on the SAC's website or contact the SAC office directly at sachealth@mta.ca.

Students who wish to opt out of one or both plans must provide proof of alternate insurance coverage that meets the SAC's opt-out criteria. Students who are approved to opt out will have the insurance charge(s) refunded to them by the SAC. The four insurance options available to international students in 2012-13 are:

  1. Keep the "accident/emergency plan" + the "supplementary plan." Total cost = $744 for 12 months.
  2. Keep the "accident/emergency plan." Opt out of the "supplementary plan." Total cost = $495 for 12 months.
  3. Keep the "supplementary plan." Opt out of the "accident/emergency plan." Total cost = $249 for 12 months.
  4. Opt out of both plans.

IMPORTANT: if you choose option #2, #3, or #4, you must provide the SAC with proof that your insurance plan is an acceptable substitute for the SAC’s plan. The best way to do this is to visit the SAC Office (1F, Wallace McCain Student Centre) or to contact their office directly at sachealth@mta.ca.

When is the opt-out deadline?

The opt-out deadline for the Fall 2012 Term is September 30, 2012. For students starting in January 2013, the opt-out deadline is January 30, 2013. You can opt out by completing the following online form. IMPORTANT – if you do not opt out by the opt-out deadline, you will not be eligible for a refund.

Where can I get more information about the SAC insurance plans?

Where can I go for medical attention?

Sackville has one hospital located on 8 Main Street. If you need to see a doctor, you can visit outpatients at the hospital 24 hours a day. Students may also visit the Wellness Centre in the Wallace McCain Student Centre for their health needs. To find out more information about the Wellness Centre, including its hours, please visit its website. Be sure to take your health insurance information with you when you go to the hospital or visit a doctor. If you do not have your health insurance information with you, the hospital or the doctor may charge you directly (after which you can submit a claim to the insurance company). It is recommended that you contact your insurance provider before any medical procedure to ensure that it is covered in your policy.

What should I do in case of a medical emergency?

If you have a medical emergency that requires immediate attention, you should dial 911.
