Health Insurance

Medical treatments in Canada can be very expensive. It is important to us that all international students are prepared if they fall sick or need medical attention while they are studying here. The university buys policies for all students for the academic year prior to their arrival on campus. This plan ensures that they can be treated without having to worry about the cost of seeing a doctor or going to the hospital.
The cost of the policy is charged to the student account and may be paid along with the other fees. Please refer to Financial Information on the university’s website for more information about the cost of the policy.

For more information about the current policy, StudentGuard, purchased by the university click here.

In winter 2011, the Students' Administrative Council opted to introduce a supplementary health insurance plan that is designed to work together with your StudentGuard insurance. To find out more about this, please contact the S.A.C. at sac@mta.ca or phone at 506-364-2231.

Do I need health insurance?

All international students studying at Mount Allison are required to have health insurance for the duration or their studies in Canada. All international students will be automatically registered for our foreign health insurance plan when they register for courses. Students wishing to be exempt from the university’s plan will have to provide an English language copy of proof of alternate health insurance by the last add/drop date. They will also be required to sign a waiver. For more information on this, please contact the International Advisor: international_advisor@mta.ca or 506-364-2112.

Where can I go for medical attention?

Sackville has one hospital located on 8 Main Street. If you need to see a doctor, you can visit outpatients at the hospital 24 hours a day. Students may also visit the Wellness Centre in the Wallace McCain Student Centre for their health needs. You may need to wait several days after booking an appointment before seeing a doctor. To find out more information about the Wellness Centre, including their hours, please visit their website. Make sure to take your health insurance information or health card when you go to see the doctor. Always phone your insurance provider before any medical procedure to ensure that it is covered in your policy. The StudentGuard toll free number is 1 (888) 756 8428.

If you have a medical emergency that requires immediate attention, you should dial 911.
