Renewing your Study Permit

In order to remain in Canada you must have a valid study permit at all times. DO NOT let your study permit expire. If your permit is expiring and you are planning to leave Canada to go on holiday or to visit your family try and renew it BEFORE you leave. If you have any questions about how to renew your study permit make an appointment to see the International Advisor.

How do I renew my Study Permit?

There are 2 ways: you can apply online or using a paper application.

1. Create your online profile and e-pass by registering with MyCIC on their website. Remember you must complete your application within 60 days of beginning the online application.

2. You will need to submit scanned copies (.pdf files) of the following documents:

Once you have all the necessary documents you can either pay the application fee online with your credit card or you can pay at your bank by obtaining a payment receipt (available at our office). The cost for a study permit renewal is $125.

Change of status (study permit to permanent resident status)

If your immigration status changes while you are studying at MtA you must report these changes to the Registrar’s Offfice and the International Advisor. Remember to show proof of your change in status such as your Permanent Residence card.

Frequently Asked Questions (Study Permits):

What date should I put on my extension?
You must put the date that you will finish your studies in Canada plus an additional 3 months if you plan to stay in the country and look for work. This will enable you to apply for the Post-graduation Work Permit.

You should be prepared to give proof of $10,000.

I’ve applied for a renewal on my study permit and I’m still waiting for it to arrive. My old permit has now expired. What should I do?
If your old study permit expires while you are waiting for a new one to be sent to you in the mail you have implied status until you receive the new one.

My Study Permit has expired and I haven’t renewed it yet! What do I do?
If your permit expires before you can renew it, you will be considered out of status. However, you may restore your status within 90 days of its expiry. The cost to do this is $200 PLUS $125 application fee. You can apply for this online or with a paper application. Do not let your study permit expire! If your permit is expired for longer than 90 days you will have to apply from outside Canada. You must notify the International Advisor immediately if this applies to you. Remember, if you are out of status you cannot attend classes or work until your new permit arrives.
