Ladies' College gymnasiums

1855-1910

The first gymnasium at Mount Allison was built for female students in summer 1855, one year after the founding of the Ladies’ College. It was located on the south side of the main Ladies’ College building, Allison Hall, close to where the Gairdner Fine Arts Building is now. In 1865, the gymnasium was lathed and plastered, and continued to be used by Ladies’ College students for calisthenics until 1891. In fall 1892, the gymnasium was moved behind Allison Hall, and in January 1893 became the Ladies' College dining hall.

Beethoven Hall, which formally opened on 2 June 1891 and was dedicated on 23 October 1891, was a spacious room inside Mount Allison’s first Conservatory of Music. The Conservatory was connected to the left of Allison Hall on the southeast, on ground presently occupied by the Ralph Pickard Bell Library. Beethoven Hall was located on the ground floor of the Conservatory, and was separated from a large assembly room by sliding doors. When the doors were opened, a large room was created for calisthenics and physical culture demonstrations, which occurred annually from 1892 to 1895. Basketball was also played inside Beethoven Hall from 1901 to 1910.
