Copp's Rink (1): 1896-1905

In 1895, brothers Hiram and Harvey Copp founded a door and sash business on the northeast corner of Weldon and Bridge streets, next to the Copp, Dixon & Co. woodworking factory, in what is now the Sackville Memorial Park. That same year, they laid the foundation for a rectangular shaped skating rink behind their business.

The new rink was the first indoor rink suitable for hockey in Sackville, and was formally opened on 6 January 1896. On that same date, the Aberdeen skating and curling rink in nearby Amherst, Nova Scotia, was also opened. Unlike the Tantramar Skating Rink, Copp’s Rink was equipped with electric lighting. A curling rink, situated next to Copp’s Rink, was also constructed the following year by the Copp brothers.

On 26 June 1905, Copp, Dixon & Co.'s woodworking factory burned down, but the curling and skating rinks did not catch fire. However, the Copp brothers sold their property in autumn 1905 to Senator Josiah Wood, then mayor of Sackville, and built a new skating rink opposite their old property on Lorne Street.
