Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing, which was first referred to as a winter sport in The Argosy in March 1877, grew in popularity through the 1880s. William Seaman, a student at the University, wrote in a letter to his brother Frank on 27 January 1888, that:

"Snow shoeing is all the rage in Sackville. Parties are organized nightly for merry tramps but as I have neither moccasins nor shoes I am excluded from that pleasure..."

Like tobogganing, snowshoeing was held primarily as an opportunity for the students to get some fresh air and exercise in a leisurely and social setting. The Argosy (January 1888) advocated the formation of a snowshoeing club, but the sport continued to be practiced informally up to and during WWI, and no clubs were ever formed.
