Original. Innovative. Motivated. Talented. Accomplished. Words to describe Mount Allison, its students, and the University’s strategic emphasis for the 2011-12 academic year.
Be inspired as Mount Allison celebrates the Year of Science and Discovery.
The Year of Science and Discovery will emphasize the role that science plays at Mount Allison and, more broadly, in Canadian society as a whole, from a broad range of disciplinary perspectives. Scientific discovery is often associated with the traditional ‘science’ fields such as biology, biochemistry, chemistry, math and computer science, physics, and psychology, and at Mount Allison these disciplines thrive with the active participation of students and faculty alike.
The Year of Science and Discovery will celebrate the innovative and award-winning teaching and research taking place on campus, but also the concept of discovery in other fields, including the humanities, and the social sciences. The Year of Science and Discovery will celebrate Mount Allison’s contributions to the scientific community of this region and to the world beyond. Reciprocally, we will also consider the ways in which we are defined by the science and technologies in which we live and work.
The President’s Speakers Series
We have an exciting list of visiting speakers who will assist us in this celebration of science and discovery through the President’s Speakers Series. This annual series welcomes leading scholars to campus each year to present and engage with the University and surrounding community. Yearly themes are linked with the pillars of Mount Allison’s Strategic Statement. This year, each speaker is a prominent member in his or her chosen field, and will offer ideas about scientific development from diverse professional perspectives.
Year of Science and Discovery speakers include: University of Oxford professor, neuroscientist, broadcaster, and author Baroness Susan Greenfield; University of Alberta professor and international expert on climate change effects and public policy Dr. David Schindler; University of Oxford and Mansfield College scholar and astrophysicist instrumental in the Nobel Prize-winning research on the discovery of pulsars Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell; Playwright, mathematician, educator, and founder of the renowned JUMP program Dr. John Mighton, OC; and world-leading expert on bonobos and research scientist in evolutionary anthropology at Duke University Vanessa Woods.
