Course Description

• This course will introduce students of the life sciences to the field of organic chemistry. The emphasis of the course will be on concepts relevant and important for students whose primary interests lie in the biological sciences. The chemistry of carbon will be introduced, and the most common functional groups encountered in organisms will be discussed. The approach will concentrate on understanding organic chemistry through electron pushing mechanisms and stereochemistry.

Textbook/Lab Manual

• Brown, William H., 1997, Introduction to Organic Chemistry,published by Saunders College Publishing (Orlando, FL), is available in the book shack.
• The book comes with the study guide and an electron pushing excercise book, and costs about $114. I know that this is a lot of money for one course, but this book is a lot better than its predecessor, and the accompanying guides are very good. If you find it too expensive I suggest you share a copy with a classmate. Try to find a used copy from someone who took the course last year.
  
• A molecular model kit is highly recommended. The chemistry society sells a very good kit at the beginning of the year for around $25. Try to find a used one!
  
• The lab notes appear in the Chemistry 2131, Laboratory Notes and Instructions, available at the bookstore.
• For the lab you will need a hardcover notebook, safety glasses and an optional, but highly recommended lab coat.

Prerequisites

• You must have successfully completed: Chemistry 1021

• The final mark will be determined approximately on the above components.
• You are responsible for attending classes and exams, completing assignments and attending the lab sessions.
• TO PASS THIS COURSE- you must pass the lab section of the course and score at least 40% on the final exam.

Lecture Format

• There are three lectures per week M, W, F at 11:30 - 12:20 in 116 Flemington.

Laboratory Component

• There will be one, 3-4 hour lab session per week, on Tuesday or Friday afternoon in Barclay 301 and 302.
• The first lab will be on September 15th or September 18th.
