Course description:
The main goal of this course is to introduce the biological study of animal behaviour (i.e. Ethology). It is hoped that the course will enhance your understanding and appreciation of the behaviour of animals in nature, and better prepare those who wish to enrol in further courses in animal behaviour and behavioural ecology.
Emphasis in the lectures will be placed on proximate mechanisms of behaviour, evolution of behaviour, behavioural ontogeny, migration, foraging, antipredation, communication, social behaviour and reproductive/parental care behaviours.
Weekly laboratory exercises will emphasize the observation, description and quantification of behaviour in a variety of animal species and offer the opportunity to conduct an independent research project.  One afternoon session will be dedicated to the viewing of several animal behaviour DVD's.
