Introduction
The Senate of Mount Allison University is established under the Mount Allison University Act 1993 (Statutes of New Brunswick, 42 Elizabeth II, C.78) and subsequent amendments. Chaired by the President and composed of members of the teaching and administrative staff and appointees of the Board of Regents, the Senate determines the academic policy of the University, subject to the availability of funds controlled by the Board and the powers reserved to the President. For example, under section 19 of the By-laws, the Senate may establish or discontinue courses, programmes, faculties, and departments; establish terms of admission to the University; control and review the requirements for degrees, certificates and diplomas and examine the qualifications for all candidates for these; establish academic regulations and procedures; and recommend to the Board policies concerning the allocation of resources.

Procedural Policies as outlined in the Mount Allison University By-laws 94-1
Composition of Senate
20(1) 1. The Senate shall be composed of the following members:

(a) the Chancellor; (b) the President; (c) the Vice-President (Academic); (d) the Academic Deans (including any Associate and/or Assistant Deans); (e) the University Librarian, the Registrar, the Director of Extension, The Director of the Canadian Studies Programme, the Chair of the Biochemistry Programme, the Director of Research Administration, and the Secretary of Senate;
(f) a representative from the teaching staff of each academic department or professional school, elected or appointed under the provisions of Section 21(1);
(g) six Faculty members elected by Faculty members on full-time appointment, under the provisions of Section 21(2);
(h) six members appointed by the Board, under the provisions of Section 21(3);
(i) six students elected by the students under the provisions of Section 21(4);
(j) a representative of the librarians on the staff of the University Library, elected under the provisions of Section 21(5);
(k) a representative of the Drama Programme elected under the provisions of Section 21(7).

2. The following shall be associate members (non-voting) of the Senate:

(a) the Senior Administrative Officer of the University as so designated by the President and such other academic and/or administrative officers as are designated by the President; the Director of Physical Education and Athletics; the President and Vice-President (University Affairs) of the Students' Administrative Council (if not already members); the two elected members of the Faculty Council Executive Committee, and
(b) Persons invited by the chairman, with the approval of Senate, for a particular meeting.

Quorum
Section 24: Fifty percent plus one of the Senate members eligible to vote shall constitute a quorum for meetings of the Senate. for a special meeting of the Senate held from and including the month of June to and including the month of August, ten members eligible to vote shall constitute a quorum.

Voting
Section 25: Questions arising at any meeting of the Senate shall be decided by a majority of votes and every Senator present at the meeting and entitled to vote shall have one vote. The chairman of a meeting shall not be entitled to vote upon any questions arising at the meeting except in the case of a Tie vote in which case he shall be entitled to a casting vote.
